The roaring 20s gave us glamour and luxury that after the austerity of war had never been seen before. Back in demand for 2018, almost a hundred years later, we are seeing an elegant take on the Art Deco trend in interior magazines. Taking sheer luxury to the next level, the Art Deco trend is full of style and sophistication and true to its roots, shape and form are of paramount importance when pulling off this look.
In soft furnishings we have seen the re-introduction of metallic look fabrics, use of silks and satin and strong geometric patterns. Additional touches of luxury such as braiding and tassels have featured prominently with even the fur rug making a resurgence with manmade copies now readily available.
Furniture has taken on the clean lines of the roaring 20’s with detail being bold and strong in its design. Furniture is shown in a mixed painted finish with wood accents with any painted surfaces being matt rather than the high gloss that has been used in previous years.
Interior paint finishes have taken on a more matt appearance with a trend towards strong colours used on all walls rather than accent walls teamed with pastel accessories.
In the kitchen and bathroom tiles are taking on a strong Art Deco theme with the subway grid being replaced with fish scale grids. Unusual scallops shaped tile that slot into each other in an endless pattern are bang on trend now, shown in glass in a soft colour pallet.
Ceiling-Height Backsplash – Take it to the Ceiling
According to the internet 2018 has seen a change of trend as more homeowners do away with wall cupboards in kitchens and opt for open shelves. Ceiling-height backsplashes can give classic tile a fresh and modern look. By highlighting a single area of the kitchen, this can create a focal point, or help a large patterned tile sing loud and proud. Higher backsplashes will unite all aspects of the space, and brighten up the space with the reflective qualities of the tile itself.
